North Carolina Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Those who ride motorcycles in North Carolina are at a higher risk of dying in a vehicle crash than operators of any other class of vehicle.
In 2006, the most recent year for which the Division of Motor Vehicles published compiled records, motorcycles were involved in less that one percent of total crashes, but were involved in nearly seven percent of fatal crashes and more than two percent of non-fatal injury crashes.
Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Crashes
More than three-quarters of fatality crashes occurred while the motorcycle was moving ahead in a straight line. By far the most common cause of motorcycle crashes is speed in excess of what is safe for existing conditions or what is posted. The next most common cause is negligent operation (erratic, reckless, careless, aggressive, etc.), followed closely by inattention.
To reduce death and injury in motorcycle crashes, North Carolina is one of only 21 states that requires safety helmets be worn by all motorcycle occupants. The law, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2008, also covers moped riders.
Community Colleges Offer Safety Courses
The North Carolina Community College System runs the state's Motorcycle Safety Education Program, which includes instructions for beginners and for more experienced riders, as well as special classes for dirt bike riders and for use of motorcycle side cars and three-wheeled motorcycles.
Even if you wear a helmet, take a safety course, and do everything else in your power to protect yourself, you can still be the victim of a motorcycle crash. Police reports show that many drivers of other vehicles are not aware of motorcycles until it's too late to avoid a crash.
